The leukemia journey is never taken alone

Evangelyn G. Nery has been living with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) since her diagnosis on 11 August 2015. Now 44, she continues to undergo oral chemotherapy and regular medical monitoring. Her journey has taught her that living with leukemia means facing not only the challenges of treatment but also the financial difficulties and uncertainties that come with a long-term illness.

For Evangelyn and her partner, Gregorio, the journey has required difficult family sacrifices. Their two children stay with their grandmother in Camarines Norte, while the couple rents a small place in Mandaluyong City so Evangelyn can receive treatment in Metro Manila. Despite the distance, they remain connected through regular calls and visits.

Like many patients from the provinces, Evangelyn hopes that quality cancer care will become more accessible closer to home, reducing the financial and emotional burden of frequent travel. Her experience underscores the importance of family support, perseverance, and access to appropriate healthcare.

Evangelyn's story also highlights the importance of knowing where to seek assistance. Through the Department of Health's Cancer Support resources, patients can explore programs such as PhilHealth Z Benefits, Yaman ng Kalusugan (YAKAP), the Cancer Assistance Fund (CAF), and the Cancer Support and Palliative Medicine Access Program (CSPMAP).

EPCALM Foundation helps patients navigate available resources alongside its own support services, recognizing that compassionate care means more than treatment—it means ensuring that patients and their families receive the guidance and support they need throughout their journey. Evangelyn's experience reminds us that no one should have to face leukemia alone.
