Patient Stories Series

(No. 55)

When Joey T. Peralta, 43, was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in March 2019, he never imagined that an illness would change the course of his life. A hardworking father of four, Joey had spent years taking on contractual jobs in the cleaning industry to provide for his family. The long hours and frequent graveyard shift often left little time for rest. But he persevered because his family was his greatest motivation.

A routine medical examination required for a job promotion, however, revealed an unusually high white blood cell count. Further evaluation at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) confirmed the diagnosis that would become one of the biggest challenges he had ever faced.

The early months were filled with fear, uncertainty, and helplessness. Joey had to leave his job to focus on treatment, while his wife, Kristy, took on the responsibility of providing for their family through on-call housekeeping work. There were times when Joey struggled to secure his medicines, adding to the family's anxiety.

Knowledge over fear. But instead of allowing fear to overwhelm him, he chose to learn about his illness and become an active participant in his own care. He researched CML, explored available assistance programs, approached government agencies, sought medication support, and learned how to navigate the systems that could help him sustain his treatment.

His determination eventually led him to EPCALM, where he officially became a serviced patient in August 2020.

Joey's leukemia journey taught him that knowledge can replace fear with confidence, and that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. He continues to undergo oral chemotherapy, with regular consultations and monitoring. Over time, he learned to manage the side effects, including bone pain, and to make healthier choices for himself.

Recognizing the importance of adequate rest, he eventually returned to the cleaning industry but chose work that did not require exhausting graveyard shifts. For Joey, recovery also meant learning to work within his body's limits while continuing to pursue a meaningful and productive life.

Today, Joey looks toward the future with greater confidence, resilience, faith, and hope. His experience has taught him that leukemia may bend your plans, change your circumstances, and test your strength—but it does not have to break your spirit.

Like bamboo that bends with the strong winds, yet remains firmly rooted, Joey continues to stand. His message to fellow leukemia patients is simple: learn about your condition, seek the help available to you, take care of your body, and never give up hope.

The journey may be difficult, but with determination, faith, the support of loved ones, and a community willing to walk beside you, there is always a reason to keep moving forward.  (By Jelyn A. Levantino)
