During the EPCALM Family Huddle held at the EPCALM House on 27 June 2026, Riza M. Padronzulan shared her inspiring journey of living with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) since her diagnosis in 2017. With honesty and courage, she recounted the many challenges she has faced over the years, including battles with COVID-19, Hepatitis B, tuberculosis, multiple hospitalizations, and nearly a decade of monthly blood transfusions. Yet through every trial, she bore witness to God's sustaining grace and remained steadfast in her faith. Riza expressed her deepest gratitude to God for carrying her through life's darkest moments and for granting her the strength to persevere. She also thanked her husband for his unwavering love and steadfast support, her healthcare providers for their dedicated care, the countless blood donors whose generosity helped sustain her life, and the EPCALM Foundation for its continuing compassion, encouragement, and patient-centered support. Her testimony serves as a powerful reminder that even amid suffering and uncertainty, faith, hope, and the support of a caring community can inspire strength, healing, and resilience. Kim shares her journey through leukemia during the EPCALM Family Huddle held on 19 November 2022. This event was our first in-person activity at the EPCALM House in New Manila, Quezon City, since the start of the pandemic in March 2019. Kim was declared cancer-free on 21 September 2024. Julie Ann was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in July 2017. During the online Family Huddle on 25 March 2022, she shared that the seriousness of her condition did not initially sink in, leading her to first explore alternative healthcare options. Eventually, she underwent chemotherapy in Manila. After an arduous journey, she was officially declared a leukemia survivor on 23 April 2023. (𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 2022)

Hector has undergone a long battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia. On 28 January 2022, during an online Family Huddle, his wife, Mithuselah, narrated his journey. In September of that same year, his oncologist confirmed he was in remission. While Hector continues his healing journey, he still faces physical challenges, including complete hearing loss in his right ear and only faint hearing in his left. Kirby, from Sagay, Negros Occidental, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. In this video, he appealed for help for his medical treatment. He also requested for prayers. The event was held on 30 December 2010 at the Clubhouse of BF Homes Executive Village Association in Parañaque City, Metro Manila to help defray her treatment costs. Karen was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This initiative serves as a powerful testament to what a united community can achieve. A dedicated internist-cardiologist, Dr. Johnel returned to his home province of Occidental Mindoro to serve the marginalized. In 2009, his practice was interrupted by a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome. Despite his health challenges, he remained steadfast in his faith. This slideshow portrays the leukemia challenges of Dr. Ella. Diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, Dr. Ella began her first chemotherapy in September 2009. Throughout her treatment, she drew strength from her spiritual resolve. She views her experience not merely as a medical battle, but as a path that brought her closer to God. After years of treatment, we are joyful to share that she was declared cancer-free in September 2015.

While working as a chef in Dubai, Alden was hospitalized three times before being diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. He faced his treatment protocol with firm determination and, following his third chemotherapy cycle, underwent a bone marrow transplant. It was during this time that EPCALM began supporting him. Alden’s journey was marked by immense community support, including a Fun Run organized in his hometown in Quezon Province to help cover his medical expenses. Throughout his battle, his strengthening spiritual growth played a significant role in his healing process. Alden passed (+) in 2016. We remain honored to have been part of his journey and to share his legacy of resilience.

Jessie shares her first photoshoot experience for the EPCALM coffee-table book project, “The Color of Hope.” The event provided her the opportunity to connect with fellow leukemia patients, and engage with advocates who support the vision and mission of EPCALM. Jessie was paired with celebrity fashion designer, JC Buendia. All photos were done by renowned photographer, Mark Nicdao. It was an inspiring day of community and advocacy, highlighting the shared journey of our patients and supporters.

Rene Macalalad: EPCALM Patient Rene Macalalad was from Mulanay, Quezon Province. Diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in January 2012, he faced significant trials and learned many valuable lessons throughout his leukemia journey. Despite the financial hardships brought on by high medical costs, Rene overcame these challenges with the support of EPCALM. Through this experience, he strengthened his faith and established a deep personal relationship with the Lord. Rene gave back to our community in his own humble way, offering words of encouragement to other patients during EPCALM activities and events.
