Health in Wellness (HIW) 2

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

In support of the World Leukemia Awareness Month (WLAM), the EPCALM Adult Leukemia Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. brings back once again EPCALM’s Health in Wellness 2 (HIW 2) event on September 20, 2023. The HIW 2 will be held at the Samsung Hall of SM AURA in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig from 10 am to 6 pm.

The main highlight of HIW 2 is a blood drive activity, which starts at 10 AM to 3 PM. This blood drive is in partnership with the Blood Bank and Transfusion Service of St. Luke’s Medical Center-Global City (SLMC-GC) to address the critical need for blood products essential for treating leukemia and lymphoma patients.

To enhance public understanding of blood cancers and highlight the importance of early detection and treatment, September has been designated as both World Leukemia Awareness Month and Blood Cancer Awareness Month. In the Philippines, the EPCALM (Erwin Piedad Cabanag Adult Leukemia Ministries) Foundation stands at the forefront of support for adult leukemia patients and their families. As part of its dedication to help improve the lives of those affected by leukemia, EPCALM is organizing a blood donation drive to commemorate World Leukemia Awareness Month this year.

Dr. Erlyn Cabanag Demerre, founder and chairman of the board of EPCALM states, “The blood donation drive is a testament to EPCALM’s commitment to improving the quality of life for leukemia patients. This bloodletting drive supports EPCALM's serviced patients and underlines the urgency of maintaining a steady blood supply for all those in need.”

The blood donation activity will be supported by skilled SLMC-GC personnel who will oversee the screening of potential blood donors, blood extraction, handling, and storage. “Eligible blood donors will be enrolled in the Blood Assurance Plan (BAP) of SLMC-GC. This plan ensures donors free access to blood, safeguarding their health and that of their immediate family members,” according to Mr. Mitchell Duran, EPCALM Executive Director.

Apart from the bloodletting activity, the event, which is open to the public, will feature a lineup of interesting activities that include booths selling a variety of merchandise, educational talks, CPR training, Indak training, Dance Fitness, and Hula Worship Training.

The grand finale? A hula worship that's making its debut in the Philippines! Pastor Bennie Lagos of Saddleback Church, who also serves as the spiritual director of EPCALM, will lead us in worship for the glory of God.

The EPCALM Foundation functions through different arms, each dedicated to providing comprehensive support to leukemia patients and their families. The Medical Care Ministry offers medical assessment, evaluation, counseling, and referrals, while the Medical Linkages and Networks Ministry establishes collaborations with medical groups, hospitals, and other medical-related organizations. EPCALM extends a hand of compassion through its Spiritual Ministry, focusing on providing spiritual services and resources to uplift patients and their families during their journey through the disease.

EPCALM calls upon the community to join hands and support its blood donation drive. Through this initiative, EPCALM envisions a world where leukemia and blood cancer patients receive the care, understanding, and hope they deserve.

This event is all about making a positive impact. We can't wait to see you there! Spread the word and let's create something special together.
