Finding hope and support along the way

Patient Stories Series
(No. 52)
At just 26, Reynan Q. Cañelas never imagined that life would take him on a journey he had never expected. A Criminology graduate and former Lalamove delivery rider, Reynan worked long hours to support himself and help provide for his family. But when persistent weakness and other health concerns led him to seek medical attention, what initially appeared to be gallbladder stones eventually led to a life-changing diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
His illness brought difficult days. After being hospitalized and undergoing surgery, Reynan continued to experience declining health and, at one point, became unable to move for several days. Yet, despite the physical challenges and uncertainty, he continued his treatment and slowly regained his strength. With his partner, Justine Caducano, by his side, he faced each new challenge with courage and determination.

It was during this difficult chapter that Reynan and Justine learned about the EPCALM Adult Leukemia Foundation of the Philippines through a friend connected to another EPCALM-serviced patient. Recognizing that they needed not only medical care but also support in navigating the many challenges of leukemia, they reached out to the Foundation and completed the requirements for enrollment.
𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔. On 7 July 2026, Reynan was officially enrolled as an EPCALM-serviced patient, opening the door to the Foundation’s holistic support programs and services for adult leukemia patients and their families. Through EPCALM’s social work support, Reynan was able to seek assistance for his medical needs, including blood products required during treatment, and help toward his hospital expenses. The Foundation also became a source of guidance and encouragement as he continued to face the financial and emotional challenges brought by his illness.
For Reynan, the journey has also brought important realizations. He has learned to value his health more deeply and to recognize the importance of caring for one’s body. More importantly, he has experienced firsthand how much strength can come from having someone beside you when life becomes difficult. With Justine’s unwavering support and the encouragement of family, friends, healthcare providers, and EPCALM, he continues to move forward.
His journey is far from over, but Reynan is choosing to face each day with courage, faith, and hope. His story reminds us that leukemia may change the course of a person’s life, but it does not have to take away the will to fight. And sometimes, knowing that someone is willing to walk alongside you can make all the difference.
Through its continuing support, EPCALM remains committed to ensuring that adult leukemia patients like Reynan do not have to face the journey alone. (By Marral June P. Lico)
