(No. 32)

After a long battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), Hector V. Valladolid Jr., 37, has reached a place of peace. In September 2022, his oncologist confirmed he was in remission.

Seeking relief from the emotional and physical toll of his illness, Hector and his wife temporarily moved to her hometown in Sevilla, Bohol, to pursue a quieter life, and a more relaxed environment.

In Bohol, Hector found renewed purpose. To support his wife, who worked remotely, he began raising and selling chickens in the local market. They lived contentedly, finding healing in their small poultry business and peaceful surroundings.

However, as his wife’s work eventually required her to return to their head office in Manila, the couple decided to move back to Barangay Plainview, Mandaluyong. Hector remained determined to help defray their family’s expenses; he began a new venture selling street food near their new home.

Despite his stage of remission, however, Hector faces physical challenges; he is completely deaf in his right ear and has only faint hearing in his left. Nevertheless, he refuses to let this define him, adapting through lip-reading and maintaining an unshakable sense of positivity.

He remains an active member of his spiritual community. He regularly attends Mass, grateful for his connection with God.

He is also deeply thankful to the EPCALM Foundation for its unwavering support throughout his recovery. To Hector, EPCALM, with whom he has been a serviced patient since April 2021, has been more than a vital lifeline.

Expressing his gratitude to the Foundation for providing the encouragement and resources necessary to navigate his journey toward healing, Hector added: “EPCALM is a constant reminder that I am never alone.” (Sr. Minerva F. Jumawid)
