Patient Stories Series

(No. 28)

This is the inspiring story of Nerry Ann A. Aguilar, a resilient young woman from Oriental Mindoro who is currently facing a renewed battle against acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Financial hardships prevented her from finishing college. Nonetheless, she worked tirelessly as a service crew member until symptoms like extreme weakness and jaundice led her to seek medical help.

Nerry was first diagnosed at the age of 18, shortly after moving to Makati to support her loved ones. To afford her initial bone marrow biopsy at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI), her close-knit family made the sacrifice of selling their livestock. Despite the physical and emotional toll of her initial treatment, including grueling chemotherapy sessions at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), she demonstrated remarkable bravery and reached remission in January 2019.

For the past five years, she has lived a productive life in her hometown, supporting her family through online selling and maintaining her health through regular monitoring. Unfortunately, recent blood tests have, and Nerry has immediately returned to Manila to begin a new treatment plan. While she remains determined and fearless in the face of this health threat, the financial and emotional demands on her family are significant.

Unfortunately, after five years of health, recent blood tests have shown concerning results, indicated a potential relapse. Nerry Ann immediately returned to Manila to face this new challenge with the same courage and faith she displayed years ago. She continues to cooperate fully with her medical team, trusting in her healing and remaining steadfast in her fighting spirit.

EPCALM Foundation is privileged to witness Nerry Ann’s perseverance. She reminds us all that while we cannot control every circumstance, we can choose to meet every threat with a spirit that is fearless and blessed.

We are sharing this story to highlight her courage and the ongoing financial and emotional support required for her continued treatment.

As a witness to her incredible perseverance, the EPCALM Foundation is seeking support to assist Nerry Ann during this critical period. We would appreciate any assistance you can provide to ensure she has the resources necessary to continue her fight and maintain her path toward long-term recovery. (By Jelyn A. Levantino)
