Patient Stories Series

(No. 25)

The challenging journey of Pedro P. Lising Jr. began in November 2021 when he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) at the age of 36.

The diagnosis followed months of him feeling unusually exhausted and dealing with persistent infections—symptoms that were confusing and alarming to him and his family. While his life has been marked with ups and downs, frustration, and worry since the diagnosis, Pedro has never lost hope for better days to come. The days and months since have truly tested his resilience, strength, and hope.

A resident of San Nicolas, Mexico, Pampanga, Pedro sought medical care at the V.L. Makabali Memorial Hospital Inc. in Sto. Rosario, San Fernando, Pampanga. His hematologist, Dr. Jomell Julian, prescribed Imatinib, a daily medication that has been essential in treating his illness.

The initial months of treatment were difficult due to uncomfortable side effects, including severe pain in his extremities, which affected his ability to walk properly. Compounding his CML are pre-existing conditions of anxiety and hypertension, which have been exacerbated by the diagnosis and ongoing treatment.

Pedro has been blessed to have the steadfast support of his family and friends. Their help—from fundraising through selling t-shirts and food, to offering emotional support and prayers—has been an unwavering source of strength. This constant presence reminded Pedro that he had people who believed in his ability to overcome the disease, and their bond has grown stronger throughout this journey.

Determined to contribute and support his family, Pedro has started working as an animal breeder assistant. This role allows him to manage his health, while staying close to home.

Pedro’s fight against leukemia is a true testament to his resilience. He has faced each day's new challenges with courage and determination. His story is about more than just surviving; it is about finding strength in adversity, recognizing the importance of family and community, and never losing hope.

Today, he continues his courageous battle with CML, anxiety, and hypertension. Despite these challenges, he remains full of hope and a renewed sense of purpose.

Pedro's journey serves as a powerful inspiration to others facing similar struggles, demonstrating that with unwavering determination and support, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.

His message to those in the midst of their own struggles is clear: "Never give up; face every challenge with courage and hope. You are stronger than you think, and with the grace of God and the support of loved ones, anything is possible." (By Sr. Minerva F. Jumawid)
