February is National Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time to educate, advocate, and support. It provides a platform for spreading information about cancer prevention, early detection, treatment options, and available resources for patients and their families.
By raising awareness and fostering community engagement, this observance contributes to the fight against cancer and the improvement of outcomes for those affected by the disease. This initiative, likewise, is to raise awareness about the growing cancer burden in the Philippines. Cancer is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the country. Through this campaign, it is hoped to inspire action toward prevention, early detection, and treatment.
For our part, EPCALM puts the spotlight on leukemia, a form of blood cancer. This month, we will feature some leukemia-focused information about leukemia in the country.
According to the latest global data on leukemia (Global Cancer Observatory, 2022), leukemia is the No. 5 cancer site among Filipino males, with 3,667 new cases recorded in 2022. At the same time, it ranks No. 8 among all cancer types, in terms of cancer incidence (7,026 for both sexes), mortality (5,416 deaths), and prevalence.
