Patient Stories Series
(No. 40)
In the city of Imus, Cavite, Edrelino R. Garcia, 59—affectionately known as "Ehd"—lived a peaceful retirement with his wife, Geneveve. A former police officer, Ehd dedicated 40 years to serving and protecting various parts of the Philippines. Together, they found comfort in their suburban home, surrounded by the love of their three adult children and seven grandchildren.
In 2008, Ehd’s routine took an unexpected turn when he began experiencing significant weight loss, persistent fatigue, and weakness. While these symptoms led to his retirement from the police force, his commitment to his children's future remained. He continued to work 12-hour shifts as a security officer until, three years later, his body could no longer keep up. It was then that he learned he was suffering from chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Despite his illness, Ehd remained undeterred. He used the retirement funds he had diligently saved throughout his career to build a modest home in Imus—a testament to his years of hard work and a symbol of the stability he provided for his family. Alongside Geneveve, he navigated this unforeseen chapter with the same dedication he applied to his decades of service.
Throughout his health challenges, Ehd remained a pillar of strength. A deeply spiritual man, he found courage in his devotion and reflection. His personal motto, “Bahala na si Lord” (The Lord’s will be done), reflected his profound trust in God. In difficult times, Ehd's unwavering faith provided him with a sense of peace that transcended his physical limitations. (By Ralph Vale Joshua I. Solidum)
