Patient Stories Series

(No. 48)

At 39 years old, Riza M. Padronzulan has endured more than most people could imagine. A former domestic helper who worked in Singapore for six years, her medical journey began in March 2017, when she was first hospitalized at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. After returning to the Philippines due to persistent symptoms, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome at the Philippine General Hospital in September 2017.

Over the years, Riza has faced one health challenge after another. She has battled COVID-19, Hepatitis B, tuberculosis, undergone several surgical procedures, managed urological complications, experienced multiple hospitalizations, and relied on monthly blood transfusions for nearly a decade.

Yet through every trial, Riza has remained unwavering in her faith. She credits God's sustaining grace for carrying her through life's darkest moments and giving her the strength to persevere despite the uncertainties of her illness.

Thankful, hopeful.  She also expresses profound gratitude to her husband, whose steadfast love and support have sustained her throughout her journey, as well as to her healthcare providers and the countless blood donors whose generosity has helped preserve her life.

Riza has been an EPCALM-serviced patient since November 2025. Through EPCALM's programs and activities, she has found a community of compassion, encouragement, and hope. She is deeply grateful to the Foundation for its patient-centered support and for reminding her that she never has to face her journey alone.

During the EPCALM Family Huddle held at the EPCALM House on 27 June 2026, Riza shared her inspiring testimony of faith, courage, and hope. Her story may be viewed in the Videos Section of the EPCALM website.

Riza's journey is a powerful reminder that even in the face of suffering and uncertainty, faith, hope, and the support of a caring community can inspire extraordinary courage and resilience. Her life bears witness to the truth that while illness may change the course of one's journey, it need not diminish hope. (By Jefriel P. Sumagad)
