ree

The EPCALM Family Huddle was held at the Healthway Cancer Care Hospital (HCCH) recently to bring EPCALM-serviced patients and their families closer to health facilities for cancer.

Inaugurated in November 2023, the HCCH is the first comprehensive cancer specialty hospital in the country, where end-to-end oncology services can be accessed in one facility,

On hand to welcome the Huddle participants and their family-caregivers were EPCALM Founder and Board Chair, Dr. Erlyn Cabanag-Demerre, EPCALM President and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Justice Demerre. Also present were Resource Development Director, Sunny Ku; and Executive Director, Mitch Duran.

On the part of the host, partner hospital, Susan Buhain, HCCH Head of Patient Experience and Navigation, noted that EPCALM and HCCH have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on 19 September 2025. The MOA established a framework for collaboration aimed at promoting universal access to healthcare and allied services.

Ms. Buhain presented an overview of the HCCH programs and services, which EPCALM patients may avail of at discounted prices, including through Guarantee Letters from medical assistance providers from the DSWD, DOH, and other government corporations, among others.

Meanwhile, Dr. Demerre said that under the EPCALM-HCCH MOA, areas of collaboration will involve comprehensive cancer care services, hospice and palliative care, patient advocacy, and health literacy and patient safety.

The partnership is the latest of EPCALM’s institutionalized linkages with umbrella patient organizations aimed at learning from each other to synergistically respond to common concerns.

Conducted every other month, the Family Huddle is an occasion for patients to casually interface with other patients, including their family members in a safe space for them to foster camaraderie among themselves, which also includes medical updates, meditation, games, sharing, etc.
