Patient Stories Series

(No. 31)

Jonallyn B. Chentes, 28, has been a serviced patient of the EPCALM Foundation since 2018. Diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) on 4 July 2016, her life changed just as she was preparing to enter college. What began as persistent swelling led to a diagnosis at the Philippine General Hospital, forcing her to pause her education to undergo grueling treatment.

The ensuing years were a test of both physical and financial endurance. Jonallyn faced the difficult side effects of chemotherapy—including hair loss and exhaustion—while her family worked tirelessly to secure medical funding through various social service agencies.

The family faced significant financial challenges, requiring everyone to contribute toward both household and medical expenses. Her mother sought assistance from various agencies, including the Malasakit Center of the Department of Health, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the offices of several public officials.

This continued until 2018, when Jonallyn was declared in remission. She has since transitioned to a lighter treatment regimen consisting of bi-annual consultations.

Despite being declared in remission in 2018, she remained under strict medical observation and was initially discouraged from returning to school.

However, Jonallyn remained steadfast. She focused on her emotional well-being and leaned on the unwavering support of her parents and sisters. In 2019, she was finally cleared to resume her studies. Today, we celebrate with her as she has officially graduated, fulfilling the dream she once feared was lost.

Jonallyn’s story is a powerful reminder that with faith and a strong support system, it is possible to overcome the most daunting challenges.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares this message of encouragement for others currently facing cancer:

“Be inspired and driven by the love of your family and friends, because without it, I wouldn’t have made it. I am thriving today—cancer-free—and my life dream has been fulfilled.” (By Ma. Genella P. Flores)
