Marlene A. Laylo, 67, is a long-time serviced patient of the EPCALM Foundation. Diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in October 2014, she was initially given only three years to live. Today, more than a decade later, she continues to thrive through God’s grace and the exceptional support of her family.
Now residing in Batangas, Marlene travels quarterly to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City for medical consultations and blood tests, which consistently show positive results. Her four children have established a highly effective support system to manage her healthcare. They coordinate her safe transportation to VMMC, accompany her to medical appointments, and manage the logistics of her oral chemotherapy.
Furthermore, they proactively work with various government agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Office of the Mayor, and Local Government Units (LGU) to secure necessary medical and financial assistance.
This systematic approach to her care is fueled by open communication and a deep commitment to her well-being. Beyond her medical needs, Marlene’s visits to Quezon City serve as cherished opportunities for family reunions and celebrations with her children, grandchildren, and relatives.
The Laylo family’s dedication demonstrates how a strong, functional family system is a vital factor in a patient’s successful healing journey.
