Rene Macalalad’s hope rests on God. He thanks and praises Him for his new trial, because now, Rene finds reason and purpose in Life: to help other Leukemia patients who are suffering the same fate, by giving strength and encouragement; and to fellow farmers (Rene being an agriculturist) to provide awareness on the dangers of using chemicals (i.e. fertilizers) on fruits and vegetables.
Rene, 25 years old, is one of the latest patients that has approached EPCALM for assistance, from far away Mulanay, Quezon Province. Last January 2012, Rene was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Coming from a financially challenged family (farmer parents), he has sought out on his own the needed finances to finance his chemo treatments.
Lost and discouraged at first as to why he was afflicted with this dreaded disease, Rene has found hope and renewed enthusiasm when he came in contact with EPCALM. Now he is willing to help others, even while journeying with his disease.

Updated Journey: Rene says “I Am Willing”

Leukemia patient Rene Macalalad visited the EPCALM office recently to say thanks for all the help that the Foundation has afforded him during his chemo treatment period the last few months.
Rene is now in remission and is ready and willing to help the Foundation in whatever way he can.

Rene has been true to his word and commitment when he recently joined the EPCALM event (see related article – EPCALM explores areas of collaboration with NCI) last February 7, 2013 at the 5th Floor conference room of the St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) located in Global City, where Rene shared his experiences while battling Leukemia and how the Foundation journeyed with him during this period.
After the event, Rene joined EPCALM in their first leg of patient visits to the hospitals because he wanted to touch base, bond and give encouragement and assurance to fellow Leukemia patient Paolo Luces, who is currently admitted in the Makati Medical Center (MMC) for ongoing chemo sessions.

What a joyful and generous heart! Please continue to pray for Rene while he is in remission. Next step for him is to generate funding for his Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). You can start now in helping Rene, by clicking on the donate button. Please indicate that your donation is for Rene Macalalad’s BMT fund. EPCALM will be starting individual fund drives (through this website) for EPCALM patients in the near future.
