Patient Stories Series

(No. 43)

Merlita B. Macalino, a 34-year-old mother of two from Macabebe, Pampanga, has been battling chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) since January 2021. Though initially overwhelmed by her diagnosis, Merlita has faced her illness with remarkable resilience and determination.

Throughout her treatment, Merlita’s family has been her anchor. Her husband, John Phillip, and their children have provided constant emotional support, while her sister, Mary Rose, and other relatives have been instrumental in funding essential procedures, such as her Bone Marrow Biopsy.

Merlita with her mother and sister: Throughout her medical treatment, Merlita’s family has been her anchor.
Merlita with her mother and sister: Throughout her medical treatment, Merlita’s family has been her anchor.

In addition to her family, Merlita has drawn immense strength from her faith in God, and the solidarity of her fellow patients in the CML Warriors group in Pampanga. Her journey eventually led her to EPCALM, where she continues to find the community and resources necessary for her healing.

As Merlita continues her brave fight, she wants to share a message of hope with her fellow patients: Never abandon your treatment. She reminds us all that resources for medical and financial assistance are available.

Connecting with others similarly situated, like EPCALM and the CML Warriors, is a good starting point in sourcing the appropriate medical options, as well as funding agencies from private and government agencies. No one has to face this battle alone. (By Ralph Vale Joshua I. Solidum)
