Patient Stories Series

(No. 42)

Shella May A. Lopera, a resilient 23-year-old from Norzagaray, Bulacan, is currently navigating life with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Diagnosed at age 18, Shella May has faced numerous challenges, including an arduous path to a correct diagnosis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite her health struggles and the financial constraints of her family—supported by her father and brother who work as construction workers—Shella May remains a source of joy and strength.

She helps at her mother’s weaving business, and finds solace in reading and connecting with others. Her academic journey has also been marked by perseverance. Although her illness forced her to withdraw from her initial studies in computer science, Shella May has realigned her goals.

She is now determined to pursue a degree in education and become a teacher, refusing to let physical limitations or discouragement dim her ambition.

Shella May’s journey is a powerful testament to the human spirit and the importance of hope.

We invite you to join us in solidarity, extending your thoughts and prayers for Shella May’s health and well-being, as well as for all members of the EPCALM Family facing similar battles.

We thank you for your continued support and shared hope. (By student interns from the University of the Philippines-Manila — Andrea Juliene S. Cruz-Am, Camille Margarethe Aileen T. Sanchez, Stephanie Anne S. Salamat, Vea Trixie S. Santos, Winona May G. Tapiru, and Jiya Liana B. Villamor).
